Destiny- Myth or Reality?

Firstly, let me clarify that I am not one of those intellectuals who consider their word to be the final verdict. You may read this and not agree with my point of view. You have a right to differ.
Now, I am not going to rely on any belief, culture or the like to state my views. Destiny may not be easy to explain. I mean I don't even know how far it's true. I do believe that there's something beyond our deeds, efforts and wishes that plays a role in our lives.
Sometimes, in spite of our best efforts and intentions, the desired outcome eludes us. So we can't really blame lack of effort for it. Sometimes, things happen and we may not like them. That's where I think this mysterious thing that has been given the name, destiny, comes into play.
They say we write our own destiny. I respect their views but truth be told, if that were, indeed the case, who, in their right mind would write a defeat, a loss of a loved one and the like in their destiny? They teach us a lot, no doubt, but then, given a choice we'd just as soon rid ourselves of it.
When it comes down to it, I'd say that destiny plays a role in our lives and the outcomes, but then again, it would be rendered useless if we didn't work hard. Nothing great is ever achieved without effort. You input effort, you get the output.
