"Why are you so quiet?"
A question that really cannot be answered in brief. A question that will inevitably lead to eye rolling (Chances are you might miss it).
Okay, so I get asked a lot of times why I am so quiet. I shrug it off because I really do not care to answer it. Also, because I AM quiet and I do not want to break the quietness.
What is beyond me is why we have a culture that requires one to be outspoken. Be it the education system, the work scenario, or the daily lifestyle, they all promote extroversion. Extroversion is practically considered the norm. And where does that leave the introverts?
For many of us, it feels like we're treading water in a giant pool of stereotypes and judgements. Some of us are better swimmers than others, but we all get tired of the struggle at some point.
Coming back to the question, "Why are you so quiet?", I have a few answers to it.
I am quiet because I want to observe my surroundings and absorb the vibes. It is much more interesting for me to be the observer than a participant.
I am quiet because there's so much I have to say but to put some of them to words is unfair to the whole lot that is unsaid. And believe me, there is tons of it.
I am quiet because my thoughts are on a marathon and it would be extremely difficult to keep up (No offense to your intellect because sometimes, even I struggle to keep up. Blame it on the lack of exercise.).
I am quiet because I have so many inside jokes that once I am done laughing, the conversation has moved on.
I am quiet because I am taking mental notes for a book I am never going to write (I am allowed to change my mind later).
I am quiet because I can give you plenty more reasons but you will end up being bored.
For quiet sensitive souls, solitude is the golden thread that unites us with our inner world..We need quiet to connect the dots in our constellation of thoughts
Introverts are known for being quiet. We are word economists in a world suffering from verbal diarrhea. Society tells us to speak up and speak out, even if that means our sentences are bloated with useless chatter.
“Our culture made a virtue of living only as extroverts. We discouraged the inner journey, the quest for a center. So we lost our center and have to find it again.” – Anaïs Nin
Solitude matters, and for some, it's the air they breathe.
Not everyone chooses to wear their emotions on their sleeves. Some actually prefer to keep it to themselves.
So, today I have a plea to make.
To the extroverts, it is okay to be an extrovert but it is not okay to impose the extroversion on the rest.
To the society, do not create boxes. It is truly stifling.
To the introverts, be your introverted self. It is normal, irrespective of what they say.
To everyone, embrace who you are. You do not need people's approval .You do not need the limelight to attest to your greatness. It is okay to be fluent in words and in silence. It is okay and normal to be YOU.
